چکیده

In this paper, we study the setting of carriersensing range in 802.11 networks under the (cumulative) physical interference model. Specifically, we identify a carrier-sensing range that will prevent collisions in 802.11 networks due to carrier-sensing failure under the physical interference model. We find that the carrier-sensing range required under the physical interference model must be larger than that required under the protocol (pairwise) interference model by a multiplicative factor. For example, if the SINR requirement is 10dB and the path-loss exponent is 4, the factor is 1.4. Furthermore, given a fixed pathloss exponent of 4, the factor increases as the SINR requirement increases. However, the limit of the factor is 1.84 as the SINR requirement goes to infinity.

P-CSMA: A Priority-Based CSMA Protocol for Multi-Hop Linear Wireless Networks

In this paper we consider a slotted multi-hop wireless network, where a source transmits continuously data to a destination node, through a route composed of multiple relays which are randomly distributed over a line. The problem of interference among separate nodes in the route is addressed. We propose a novel Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol, named Prioritybased Carrier-Sense Multiple Acc...

CSMA-SIC: Carrier Sensing with Successive Interference Cancellation

Successive interference cancellation (SIC) is a physical layer technique that enables the decoders to decode multiple simultaneously transmitted signals. The complicated model of SIC requires careful design of the MAC protocol and accurate adjustment of transmission parameters. We propose a new MAC protocol, known as CSMA-SIC, that employs the multi-packet reception capability of SIC. The propo...

Cross-Layer Designs for Body-to-Body Networks: Adaptive CSMA/CA with Distributed Routing

In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive carrier sense multiple access scheme with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) to perform efficient and reliable data transfer with increased throughput across multiple coexisting wireless body area networks (BANs) in a tiered architecture. We investigate the proposed scheme using two distributed cross-layer optimized dynamic routing techniques, i.e., shortes...

Cross Layer Analysis of Spectrum Sensing in the Cognitive Radio Paradigm

In this paper, the performance of the carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol at MAC layer with sensing errors at physical layer is investigated. Here the sensing errors are captured by modifying the Markov chain model widely used for the CSMA/CA analysis called Bianchi’s model. We investigate the throughput as a function of carrier sensing error probabilities:...

IP-MAC: A Distributed MAC for Spatial Reuse in Wireless Networks

The CSMA/CA driven MAC protocols withhold packet transmissions from exposed stations when they detect carrier signal above a certain threshold. This is to avoid collisions at other receiving stations. However, this conservative scheme often exposes many stations unnecessarily, and thus minimizes the utilization of the spatial spectral resource. In this paper, we demonstrate that remote estimati...
